about sarah claxton
I first picked up a camera while teaching in Israel in 1998. I was working in a community center and began a photo essay on the children of recent Ethiopian immigrants. I fell in love with photography immediately.
When I returned home to the States, I enrolled at Brooks Institute and completed an undergrad degree in commercial advertising photography. Feeling the need to get back to my roots, I left California for New York and an internship with acclaimed documentary photographer Mary Ellen Mark. While balancing my internship with working for several studios in NY that shot mainly fashion, I decided that fashion and advertising photography was not the world for me and moved to Washington DC. I have been working as a freelance photographer since, as well as working on the business side of photography for Feld Entertainment and USA WEEKEND Magazine. I have been in the role of photo editor, art director and producer. My business background allows me to understand your needs and be a conscientious collaborator.
Photography is my way to organize the world, to relate and to process. There is a story in every moment. I love exploring and experiencing new situations.
I currently reside in Washington, DC and am available for assignments world-wide.
